..."The result is clear: the
ABS avalanche airbag is highly likely to prevent total burial and the
person to approach in the statistic the “death kink” of the Falk-Brugger graph.
All other emergency devices,
avalanche rescue transceivers, avalanche ball and Avalung have to accept
total burial. The time to find the buried person faster using the avalanche
ball reduces the locating time whereby the more critical factor time,
namely the time it takes to dig the victim out, will remain a crucial
disadvantage.

"The ABS-Backpacks are now well established. With its easy handling and only 2 kg of additional weight the ABS-Backpack is very suitable for backcountry skitours. The principle of the ABS-System (prevention of total burial in an avalanche) has been proven. Especially on guided winter tours or in steep terrain the use of the ABS-Backpacks in combination with assessment of avalanche hazards appears to offer the possibility to minimise the risk."

"The way the Avalanche Airbag operates is persuasive. In many cases it prevents burial - and victims who are not buried will survive in most cases. The general consideration is therefore quite clear since even with the most modern transceivers the victim can only pieps, and equipped with a marking ball or a "breathing vest" can only hope that a fellow skier will dig him/her out.
The so often mentioned inherent risk when touring outside the safety of the ski area is lowered to a new level due to the Avalanche-Airbag-System."
